What is a Global Service Relation Number (GSRN)?

Modified on Wed, 28 Aug at 7:35 PM

A Global Service Relation Number (GSRN) is the GS1 Identification Key used to identify the relationship between an organisation offering services and the recipient or provider of services. The key is comprised of a GS1 Company Prefix, Service Reference and Check Digit.

For example, it may be used in the healthcare sector for a hospital admission to identify a subject of care globally and uniquely for AIDC purposes and establish an identification uniqueness that does not harm privacy. Membership in a club, in a student library or in a loyalty scheme are other examples. An individual can have several different GSRNs as the numbers only identify a person in relation to one service provider.

The Application Identifiers (8017, 8018) indicate that the GS1 Application Identifier data field contains a GSRN. The GSRN is used to identify either the recipient (8018) or individual provider of the services (8017) in the context of a service relationship.
