Will EAN/UPC barcodes be replaced by GS1 DataMatrix at Retail POS?

Modified on Mon, 2 Sep at 7:35 AM

In the short term, No. GS1 DataMatrix requires image scanners which are not currently, pervasively implemented all over the world. As 2D scanners grow in their implementation rate, the options for using different types of symbols become more feasible on a global basis.

Two key examples for the use of GS1 DataMatrix are:
  • Healthcare: products which require a GTIN and attributes (e.g. batch number, expiry date, serial number)
  • Direct Part: Marking for items such as reusable surgical instruments.
  • Retail: Marking of variable measure fresh food items with GTIN and additional data.
