What is an ‘Implied’ Application Identifier (01) in a barcode?

Modified on Fri, 30 Aug at 12:39 PM

The GS1-128, GS1 DataMatrix, GS1 QR Code, GS1 DataBar and GS1 DotCode symbols require the explicit use of Application Identifiers to denote what the data means in these barcodes.

The other five symbols - ITF-14, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and UPC-E - can only encode a GTIN. This is the equivalent of using GS1 Application Identifier (01) in the first four symbols mentioned, so the Application Identifier (01) is being implied.
